Ricky Taylor Tops Shortened CTMP Practice | IMSA WeatherTech Championship (2026)

The Chevrolet Grand Prix at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park kicked off with a thrilling opening practice session, but it was cut short due to an accident involving a GTD car. Despite the interruption, the session still produced some impressive results and highlighted the competitive nature of the race.

Ricky Taylor, driving the No. 52 Bryan Herta Autosport with PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports Oreca 07 Gibson, claimed the top spot with a lightning-fast lap time of 1:08.080. This time was a mere 0.098 seconds faster than Sebastian Alvarez in the No. 8 Tower Motorsport Oreca. Taylor's performance was a testament to his skill and the prowess of the Cadillac factory team.

In the LMP2 category, Alex Quinn secured third place with a time of 1:08.287. The top five positions were dominated by skilled drivers and their respective teams, showcasing the high level of competition in the race.

The GT cars also made their mark, with Philip Ellis in the No. 57 Winward Racing Mercedes-AMG GT3 Evo claiming the top spot. This was a significant achievement, as Ellis outperformed the entire GTD Pro field. The No. 3 Corvette Racing by Pratt Miller Motorsports Chevrolet Corvette Z06 GT3, driven by Antonio Garcia, was the quickest in its class, demonstrating the strength of the Chevrolet brand in the GT3 category.

The session was not without its dramatic moments. Lorenzo Patrese, driving the No. 34 Conquest Racing Ferrari 296 GT3 Evo, suffered a crash at Moss Corner, bringing out the first red flag. Patrese, however, managed to bring his car back to the pit lane with minimal damage and rejoined the session. The second red flag was raised when Callum Ilott's No. 120 Wright Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R Evo made heavy contact with the tire barriers at the same corner.

The early conclusion of the practice session means that both Ilott and Patrese will likely have their fastest times disallowed in qualifying. The second and final practice session is scheduled for Saturday, followed by qualifying, which will be streamed live on Peacock and IMSA's YouTube channel.

This race promises to be an exciting spectacle, with the top drivers and teams battling for supremacy. The early stages of the season have already showcased the intense competition, and the Chevrolet Grand Prix is set to be another thrilling chapter in the ongoing saga of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.
