The Red Hot Chili Peppers' producer, Michael Beinhorn, has dropped a bombshell claim about frontman Anthony Kiedis' singing abilities.
Beinhorn, who worked with the band during their formative years, has revealed that Kiedis is 'tone-deaf', a statement that might surprise many fans.
During an AMA session on the grunge subreddit, Beinhorn shared insights into his time with the band, including the story behind the track 'Knock Me Down' from their 1989 album 'Mother's Milk'. This song, a heartfelt tribute to their late guitarist Hillel Slovak, who passed away from a heroin overdose in 1988, features both John Frusciante and Kiedis on vocals.
A fan, who described the song as one of their favorites, asked why Frusciante sang on the track, given its personal connection to Kiedis and Slovak's friendship. Beinhorn's response was eye-opening:
"John sang the song because it was melodic, and Anthony was/is tone-deaf. He can't hear pitch."
Beinhorn added that Frusciante essentially wrote the song, including the melody, so it made sense for him to take the lead vocally.
But here's where it gets controversial...
Beinhorn revealed that Kiedis 'freaked out' when he first heard the finished track with Frusciante's vocals, and he believes the band 'disowned' the record due to this tension.

Despite these creative differences, the Red Hot Chili Peppers have continued to make music, releasing their last two albums, 'Unlimited Love' and 'Return of the Dream Canteen', in 2022, with Frusciante back in the lineup.
In an interview with NME, Kiedis spoke about the band's determination to bring something fresh to their music, saying:
"I didn't want to tell the same old story... We wanted to tap into something honest and emotional."
