A shocking turn of events has unfolded in the world of ice hockey, leaving fans and experts alike in a state of disbelief. Mitch Love, the former assistant coach of the Washington Capitals, has found a new home in the KHL, despite a cloud of controversy surrounding his name.
Love's journey began in October 2025 when he was suspended for the entire 2025-26 NHL season. The reason? Allegations of domestic abuse, a serious charge that led to his dismissal from the Capitals. In a recent tweet, Pierre LeBrun shared that Gallant, in consultation with his KHL team doctors and management, decided to focus on his health and return home to PEI.
"We are still in the playoff race, and with a significant portion of the season ahead, we had to evaluate our options," said Sergey Belykh, CEO of the Shanghai Dragons. "After a thorough review, we chose Mitch Love as our new head coach."
Love, 41, brings an impressive coaching resume to the table. He served as an assistant coach for the Capitals for two seasons and was the head coach of the AHL's Calgary Wranglers before that. Love's success in the AHL earned him the title of AHL Coach of the Year in 2022 and 2023.
However, the NHL's suspension cast a shadow over his career. In a statement, the league cited "conduct detrimental to the league" as the reason for the suspension, adding that Love could apply for reinstatement for the 2026-27 season under certain conditions.
